What is the strategy for the Legal and Co Sec team:
To be a trusted business partner.
To give commercial, pragmatic advice balancing risk and reward.
To set Mitie up for success with good corporate governance.
To mitigate risks and monitor for change.
What do Legal and Co Sec do?
Instructing outside counsel
Mitie has existing relationships with various external firms who are instructed to deal with various issues depending on the nature of the expertise required. General Counsel or Group Legal Director approval is needed prior to instructing external counsel.
Each team holds its own precedent set of documents – speak to your line manager to understand what is available. If in doubt ask and it may well be that another lawyer has something suitable
Know how/Continuing development
Each lawyer is responsible for ensuring that they stay abreast of legal developments relevant to their area. It is an SRA Requirement that all solicitors undertake regular learning and development. You are encouraged to keep an eye out for courses/training offered by law firms, as well as other forms of learning (e.g. webinars or online learning). Speak to your line manager if there is a cost associated with any learning needs.
You will need to ensure your SRA registration is up to date and refers to Mitie. Please opt into “Bulk renewal” to allow mass renewal of practicing certificates.
Mitie has access to certain Thomson Reuters products (e.g. Practical Law) please speak to the Co Sec team for access.
We use iManage for email and document storage. Your line manager will demonstrate how to use it. The Company Secretarial team use specific products for monitoring insider lists and statutory registers.
We have detailed guidance relating to our house position on key contract terms with customers and suppliers. Your line manager will provide training on this when you join.
